Don’t abuse your Au Pair’s position in your family

Do I have to clean the house or do other domestic duties?

No, you are not expected to clean the entire house, do the family laundry or to regularly prepare meals for your entire Host Family.

Your duties as an Au Pair relate to taking care of the children. These responsibilities may include cleaning up after the children, preparing meals, doing the children’s laundry and other child care related items.

Au Pairs want to know when they join your family, and that is what it is intended to be, that they will not be there as a servant, but an extension of the parental care-givers, perhaps a big sister or aunt, not someone who is there to clean up after your every mess. Au Pairs are there to enhance your family and provide your children with a cultural child care experience, so please, Host Families, make your Au Pair a real member of the family and not a household or domestic servant.

For more information about Go Au Pair and a cultural child care experience for your family, visit or contact LAR Joan Lowell in the Providence, RI and surrounding areas at or 401.309.1925.
