I am guilty of breaking this rule and letting my kids occasionally ride without a helmet. A head injury or traumatic brain injury is a devastating tragedy when it happens. Be proactive and enforce that rule. No helmet, no riding anything with wheels. I need to buy a couple more helmets! Make sure your Au Pair or other childcare provider is consistent with this rule as well.

Many kids don’t wear a helmet when riding a bike or scooter in their own driveway or in front of the house. “But kids can and do fall and hit their heads in the driveway,” Levine points out. “My rule is, if you’re not wearing a helmet, you can’t get on a bike or scooter.”
