For those of you new to the program or considering an Au Pair, you should know there is a Social Event requirement as part of the Au Pair program. Your Local Area Representative should have explained it to you during the Host Family Interview or during the Orientation. There are requirements for both Host Families and Au Pairs.
Why, you ask, do I need to attend social events? If you are a Host Family, only one event must be attended in the year your Au Pair is with you. This can help you meet other families in your area who are also hosting international guests. This is a great opportunity to compare notes and see what they are doing right, and wrong. This is also a chance to meet your LAR again face-to-face and ask any questions that may have come up, or just to chat and get to know each other better. LARs should plan one to two “family-oriented” events each year, giving Host Families more than one option for attendance.
If you are an Au Pair, you must attend at least four events during your year of service, and your LAR usually plans one event every other month or so. By attending a variety of events, you will meet other Au Pairs from other countries who are also placed and working in the area, giving you local friends in the program! You will also have the opportunity to visit local points of interest and get to know the area from a local perspective. These events are a great opportunity to talk to others in the program and find out what their Host Families are like, what kinds of activities they do & where they take their classes. All of this wards off homesickness, a bitter enemy of the Au Pair. Finally, social events give the Au Pair a chance to speak directly to their LAR, ask questions, practice their English, and develop lasting relationships with a variety of people.
