Happy Birthday, Dear America!

Happy Independence Day to all! I hope you are spending the holiday celebrating your cultural experience in America with some traditional activities such as a parade (we are going to the famous Ancients & Horribles Parade in Chepachet, RI at 4pm), or a barbeque cook-out, or maybe a day at the beach. I would love to see your family holiday photos or videos, and will share mine too! The picture above is my son two years ago at the July 4th parade. He has changed quite a bit and I will show you on my next blog post!

What are your plans? Are you celebrating with your host family or getting together with other au pairs? We will also visit family, eat hamburgers, hot dogs, macaroni and potato salad, and hopefully a selection of great desserts and refreshing holiday beverages. We might even play a game of croquet, if there is any shade in the yard and the mosquitoes take a break. Later tonight, we will sit by a local lake and watch a gorgeous fireworks display over the water.

As you celebrate today, please remember the Founding Fathers who fought so hard to gain our freedom and independence so long ago. Also, keep in mind there are thousands of men and women who still fight today in order for us to maintain those freedoms. Be mindful of the sacrifices many have given which allow us to celebrate today. If your host family has young men or women or any family members in the military, be sure to thank them for their sacrifice and for their service.

Has your home country had struggles for independence or does it still struggle? Today would be a great time to share your stories or experiences about similar struggles in your native land. If you want, ask your host family questions about this country’s political struggles, as each person has a unique perspective and experience. Each culture should be appreciated and all people deserve basic freedoms.

Perhaps you will meet someone today who is in need of a flexible child care provider; suggest they contact me, Joan Lowell, your Go Au Pair Local Area Representative in the Providence, RI area. I can be reached at 401.309.1925 or jlowell@goaupair.com. Ask me about our Local Area Promotional Discount!
