This time of year, it can be easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the holidays and lose focus. This may be especially true if one is far from home. My best advice is two-fold: keep your mind and hands busy, but not so busy that you forget to take some time each day to appreciate the beautiful moments in even the most hectic life. Don’t forget to touch base with the Au Pair Sis on Facebook, meet some new Au Pair friends, and get some great ideas for easy recipes or crafts to do with your family!
That may be easier said than done, but here are a few ways to try. When you first wake up, spend a few minutes just stretching and breathing. If you can, sit by a window and enjoy whatever view you have, or if it isn’t too cold, take a short walk. It is important to start each day in a good frame of mind, to take a few moments to reflect on the good things.
When the hustle and bustle gets rough, make a concerted effort to put a smile on your face, even if you are feeling a bit frustrated or upset. It will help you keep in that positive frame of mind and share positive energy instead of negative.
Whatever you do, do it with joy. Reach out to your loved ones and friends, no matter how far away. A letter or email or phone call can go a long way to cheer one up at the end of a busy day. Share your experiences and you will soon discover others who share and can support you when you need it.
Host Families and Au Pairs should make an effort to include each other in their celebrations, as well as take time to reflect on this great experience, even with its inevitable ups and downs in the day-to-day routine. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to all my Go Au Pair families, friends and Au Pairs!
