Go Au Pair Providence wants its au pairs and Host Families to have lots of options this summer! As part of the Au Pair Program, sponsored by the US Dept of State, your Local Area Representative (that’s me, Joan Lowell) is required to host several social and cultural events each year which are designed to give the au pairs within my cluster a taste of our local culture. Go Au Pair requires me to host at least six of these types of events each year, and au pairs are required to attend at least four; Host Families are required to attend one Family Day Conference, or family event, as well. I want the families in our cluster to feel welcome, so I invite them to many of our au pair events as well. This can help with networking, transportation to events (which Host Families must provide) and overall morale of the group as a whole, including au pairs and Host Families.
So far this year, we have had two events and one event didn’t have enough response (sorry PawSox). We have been ice skating at the new Alex and Ani City Center in downtown Providence (our creative capital) in February and we toured the zoo at Roger Williams Park Zoo, flew kites, hugged some trees and had a picnic lunch at the Temple to Music in the park. This summer, we have several events to whet your whistle with what Rhode Island has to offer. Join us, au pairs and families alike, for one or all of them! Mark your calendars, please, for our local area events.
On July 9, join Go Au Pair Providence and our au pairs and families as we visit the Newport Cliff Walk in magical Newport, RI.
On July 18th, witness the world-famous Providence WaterFire, where our three rivers converge in downtown with nearly one hundred fires, complete with street performers, musicians and gondola rides (call now to schedule yours).
On August 13th, relax and get groovy at Charlestown, RI’s own national treasure, The Fantastic Umbrella Factory, a 19th century farmyard shopper’s paradise and international bazaar.
If your summer schedule doesn’t “groove” with ours here at Go Au Pair Providence, maybe you can squeeze in a fun and healthy event this fall. For our third consecutive year, we will represent Go Au Pair in the Happiest 5K on the Planet at the ColorRun in Providence on September 27th! Sign up now – our team is called Go Au Pair Providence and we want you to run/walk/stroll with us!
If you love to run and love the ocean, sign up for the Gansett Half Marathon (I may spectate) on October 25 this year; the 13.1 mile course takes you through scenic Narragansett like no tour can!
To keep your karma positive, perhaps you are looking for a volunteer experience as part of your cultural exchange experience in the US. I was recently told, by an au pair, that it seems as though we in America have a volunteer for everything! If you have service on your heart and mind, can I suggest VolunteerMatch, an online organization specializing in bringing together good people and good causes. Check them out for yourself – they have very local opportunities!
As always, contact me, Joan Lowell, your Rhode Island area Go Au Pair representative, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 401.309.1925. I look forward to hearing from you or meeting you at one of our local events this summer!
